“Hey.” Julie tossed a small box onto Andi’s lap. “Mail call. You sure you’re not going with me tonight?”

Andi looked up from Nightmare on Elm Street III, to see her best friend flop into one of the other chairs in the living room. Julie had been nagging—sorry, asking kindly… and repeatedly—for Andi to accompany her to some co-worker’s Halloween party.

“Still don’t have a costume.” It was Andi’s fallback excuse. Really, she didn’t care for the holiday. Which she knew made her a bit of a Scrooge. Or whatever the Halloween equivalent was. She couldn’t explain why; it just wasn’t her thing.

“Bummer. I’m going to get ready.”

As Julie made her way to her room, Andi turned her attention to the package. She smiled when she saw Kane’s name on the return address label. Kane and Isaiah were her boyfriends. It still sounded weird to say it that way, especially since they’d been with each other first, but the reminder of either or both was enough to send a flurry of warmth through her.

She picked at the tape sealing the box shut, and when it didn’t tear away easily, she wandered into the kitchen for something sharp. Fortunately, scissors were an easy find. Julie was very much a place-for-everything kind of gal.

Andi, not so much. But she wasn’t complaining. Especially since Julie was letting her crash here until they moved to Chicago in a few weeks, to expand their custom cookie business.

And put Andi closer to Kane and Isaiah. Long distance relationships sucked.

She found something to cut with and sliced the box open. When she saw a flimsy red fabric, she frowned.

She pulled it out, and a light dress with spaghetti straps unfurled in front of her. There was a pair of black shorts in the box as well.

Andi laughed and held the clothing up. Almost the perfect size. “Julie,” she called, striding toward the rooms on the other side of the apartment.

Julie poked her head out. “What?”

“Can I borrow your black boots? The ones that zip up the sides? I’ll go to the party with you.”

Julie raised her brows. “Yes, but why?”

“Show you in a minute.” Andi stepped into the guestroom, to change.

As she stripped out of her street clothes, the conversation with Kane and Isaiah, from a few days ago, replayed in her head.

Isaiah wanted to know the same thing Julie had. Why didn’t Andi like Halloween? She gave him the same stock answer.

“You should wear something sexy.” Kane was next to Isaiah, sharing the webcam for Skype.

“Because I’m… not trying to pick anyone up?” Andi wasn’t sure what the point was.

Kane shook his head, and the crappy apartment wi-fi blurred his face. “You’re doing it for yourself. If they want to look, who cares?”

“And you’re doing it for him,” Isaiah said. “Don’t let him fool you. He wants pictures.”

Andi laughed through her embarrassment. “I’m not taking pictures of myself.”

“At least tell us about all the looks you get then.
